Character background and lore

Sebastian Michaelis is the butler to Ciel Phantomhive, a young British aristocrat at the head of the prestigious Phantomhive family. The story of Black Butler is set in 19th-century England, where Ciel secretly acts as the ‘Queen’s watchdog’, tasked with resolving certain matters relating to the criminal underworld and the interests of the Crown.

Sebastian appears to be the perfect butler. Whether cooking, maintaining the mansion, fighting, investigating or carrying out covert missions, he accomplishes virtually every task his master entrusts to him with disconcerting ease. The official profile describes him as a servant capable of executing every one of Ciel’s orders to perfection.

However, there is a supernatural explanation for this perfection: Sebastian is, in fact, a demon. He has entered into a contract with Ciel to help him carry out his revenge. The anime’s official website directly confirms that his true identity is that of the demon with whom Ciel made this pact.

The contract creates a very special relationship between the two characters. Sebastian must serve Ciel and follow his orders until Ciel has achieved his goal, whilst the purpose of their agreement gives their collaboration a far darker dimension than a simple master-servant relationship.

Despite his human appearance and impeccable manners, Sebastian possesses abilities far superior to those of an ordinary man. His speed, strength and reflexes enable him to neutralise dangerous opponents whilst almost always maintaining a calm and elegant demeanour.

In the ‘Public School’ arc, Ciel receives a new mission from the Queen following the mysterious disappearance of several pupils from a prestigious British institution, Weston College. Ciel and Sebastian then infiltrate the school to discover what has happened to the missing pupils.

Sebastian must once again adapt his role to the situation and navigate the highly regimented environment of the boarding school whilst continuing the investigation alongside his master.
