Aladdin and the genie in the lamp

An impossible love between a princess and a lower-class young man, a genie trapped in a magic lamp, oriental palace intrigue, and a flying carpet on top of it all... the story of Aladdin is a classic of popular culture. Shop For Geek brings these adventures to life with a myriad of Disney-licensed accessories.

Oriental origins... and French

Over the last decade, the French public has been reacquainted with Aladdin, Jasmine, Jafar and the genie of the lamp. This is thanks to the high-profile 2015 release of Arthur Benzaquen's film "Les nouvelles aventures d'Aladin". The actor Kev Adams gave him his features and even provided original songs for the film, which saw a sequel "Alad'2" in 2018, with Jamel Debouzze completing the cast.

We all know the story of Aladdin from the Disney Studios cartoon released in 1992. It was a huge success, not least because it was set right in the middle of Disney's second golden age, alongside such great films as The Lion King and The Little Mermaid. In popular culture, Aladdin's adventures are often thought to have been taken from "1001 Nights".

In reality, the story of Aladdin and the genie never appeared in this collection, and neither did "Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves". The "Book of 1001 Nights" is a collection of stories and tales of various oriental origins, Arab, Persian, Indian... and the story of Aladdin was added by the French scholar Antoine Galland at the beginning of the 18th century, based on the autobiographical account of the Syrian Hanna Dyab. It was then entitled "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp".

Princesses Jasmine, Shallia and Badroulboudour

In the story told by Antoine Galland, Aladdin lives in China and covets Princess Badroulboudour, daughter of the Sultan. The plot is the same: Aladdin has to get hold of a magic lamp on behalf of an evil sorcerer, but ends up using it and his genie to win the heart of the princess, who is promised to the son of the vizier. The sorcerer then takes the lamp and transports Aladdin to a faraway land to get rid of him, but Aladdin manages to return.

The Disney version sets the plot in the Middle East and renames the princess Jasmine, a name much easier for Western audiences to remember.

In the French version, in live action, we find Kev Adams in the lead role and Vanessa Guide in the role of the princess, here renamed Shallia. Jean-Paul Rouve plays the Vizier, Eric Judor the genius, and we even find La Fouine in a small role. Finally, Michel Blanc plays the Sultan.

An American remake of Aladdin

In 2019, Hollywood is releasing its own live-action Aladdin film. This is the remake of the Disney cartoon, with Will Smith in the role of the genie, Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Jasmine.

Disney-licensed Aladdin accessories

In our Shop For Geek online shop, you'll find a range of Disney-licensed Aladdin accessories and items. You'll soon recognise the big blue genie, or the adorable Princess Jasmine, on cups, mugs, notebooks... and of course the Posket Mini figurines.

Our accessories also feature characters from the cartoon. We're thinking in particular of the little monkey Abu, who helps Aladdin to keep the magic lamp, or the tiger Rajah, Princess Jasmine's faithful companion and protector.

Relive the adventures of the famous magic lamp thief, madly in love with his beloved princess, in his marvellous oriental setting. Perhaps you'll find yourself stroking a replica of the magic lamp, dreaming that a genie will emerge and grant all your dearest wishes. That's the beauty of these tales and cartoons: they transport us to a world where anything is possible. So don't hesitate to surround yourself with Aladdin-themed figurines, mugs, t-shirts and puzzles from our geek shop.

It's also an opportunity to share your passion with your family, and perhaps prepare them to discover a future new version of Aladdin's adventures at the cinema, on television or streaming. These tales are always adapted to the latest tastes so that they never disappear from our collective memory.
