The history of Star Trek

The first Star Trek television series, entitled "Star Trek: The Original Series", was first broadcast in 1966. It featured Captain James T. Kirk, played by William Shatner, and his crew aboard the USS Enterprise, a United Federation of Planets starship. The series was groundbreaking for its time, as it tackled contemporary social and political issues in the guise of science fiction, dealing with topics such as diversity, discrimination, the Cold War and cross-cultural relations. The series was cancelled after three seasons, but gained a dedicated fan base.

Thereafter, the series had several lives:

  • Creation of several spin-off television series, films, books and other media.
  • Airing of the animated series "Star Trek: The Animated Series" in 1973-1974.
  • Release of the first film "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979, followed by several other films.
  • Launch of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in the 1980s, with a new crew and a new USS Enterprise.
  • Several other television series aired, including "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Star Trek: Enterprise".
  • Reboot of the franchise with the release of a new movie in 2009 directed by J.J. Abrams.

The Star Trek influence

Star Trek also pushes the boundaries of science fiction with groundbreaking scientific concepts and futuristic technologies that have inspired real-world advances. From light-speed teleportation, to high-performance computers and revolutionary medical devices, Star Trek offers an exciting glimpse of what the future may hold.

Trekkies

Star Trek fans are some of the most hardcore fans in popular culture. Like Star Wars, many works have been made possible by this strong fan base known as trekkies. These works include

  • Fan films: these are amateur films made by fans with their own equipment and budget. The quality can vary greatly. They can be both short films and feature films, and can explore various periods and characters in the Star Trek universe. Some have been so successful that they have been approved by the creators themselves.
  • Fan fiction: This is a genre of writing where fans create their own stories based on the Star Trek universe. Mostly created online, these stories are often shared in fan forums, and they explore new adventures, situations or personality aspects of existing characters.
  • Cosplay: you have probably seen fans dressing up as the heroes of their favourite fiction. This is called Cosplay. Star Trek is a universe that lends itself perfectly to this art of disguise. Conventions and Star Trek fan events are often an opportunity for cosplayers to show off their costumes and come together to celebrate their love for the franchise.
  • Fan-made art: drawings, paintings, sculptures, digital creations and other art forms. Star Trek fans also apply themselves a lot in different art forms.
  • Board games and role-playing games: Star Trek fans have also created their own geeky board games and role-playing games based on the Star Trek universe.
