The history of Star Trek
The first Star Trek television series, entitled "Star Trek: The Original Series", was first broadcast in 1966. It featured Captain James T. Kirk, played by William Shatner, and his crew aboard the USS Enterprise, a United Federation of Planets starship. The series was groundbreaking for its time, as it tackled contemporary social and political issues in the guise of science fiction, dealing with topics such as diversity, discrimination, the Cold War and cross-cultural relations. The series was cancelled after three seasons, but gained a dedicated fan base.
Thereafter, the series had several lives:
- Creation of several spin-off television series, films, books and other media.
- Airing of the animated series "Star Trek: The Animated Series" in 1973-1974.
- Release of the first film "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979, followed by several other films.
- Launch of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in the 1980s, with a new crew and a new USS Enterprise.
- Several other television series aired, including "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Star Trek: Enterprise".
- Reboot of the franchise with the release of a new movie in 2009 directed by J.J. Abrams.

They can be both short films and feature films, and can explore various periods and characters in the Star Trek universe. Some have been so successful that they have been approved by the creators themselves.
