The Quintessential Quintuplets

Futaro, a gifted but lonely and tortured high-school student, is given a very lucrative assignment: he has to tutor a rich girl from the Nakano family... but things get complicated when she turns out to be five twin sisters, quintuplets. And since none of them wants to study, it's the start of a comic and romantic adventure that has become a hit in manga and anime.

Who are the quintuplets?

Let's start by answering that question. Futaro has to teach five identical girls, but the story is all about their different personalities. Indeed, the only thing they have in common is a complete lack of interest in studying, which translates into catastrophic grades. It's Futaro's job to help them improve their grades... if they're willing!

In the manga, each of the sisters is colour-coded (including their hair) and given a number. So it's by their number that we're going to introduce them:

  • 1) Ichika Nakano, colour code yellow. She's the 'oldest' in the sorority and acts as a leader. Sociable and optimistic, she acts as a 'mother' to her sisters, but she also sometimes doubts her own abilities and is overly sensitive. She is torn between her classical schooling and her pursuit of dramatic arts, as she dreams of becoming an actress.
  • 2) Nino Nakano, colour code mauve. The second youngest, she is the family cook and protector. Straightforward and (too) outspoken, she doesn't give in. But she can also be too emotional in her relationships.
  • 3) Miku Nakano, colour code blue. She's the intellectual in the family, always immersed in her books, but not the ones at school! A great reader, she's also shy and introverted, lacking in self-confidence. As the series progresses, she gains in confidence and expresses herself more and more.
  • 4) Yotsuba Nakano, colour code green. The family sportswoman, she has the appearance of a very friendly, cheerful person, always ready to help others. But behind this mask lies a person with an inferiority complex who wants to distinguish herself visually from her sisters.
  • 5) Itsuki Nakano, colour code red. The most complicated of the five sisters, she is the most studious, serious and disciplined. But she's constantly wrestling with her own instincts, torn between her desire for discipline and her human impulses. She stands out for her way of speaking, which is always formal (in Japanese, she speaks with "keigo", a particularly long honorific).

A mystery of love

The Quintessential Quintuplets manga, a romantic comedy, is a captivating piece of animation in which love plays a central role. The reader's curiosity is kept alive by the story's flashback structure. Right from the start, the main character, Futaro Uesugi, lets us know that he has ended up marrying one of the five sisters... but without revealing which one.

Over the course of the episodes, he gets closer to one of them and then the other, while jealousy conflicts erupt and twists and turns unfold. It will be hard to guess which of the five he will marry.

About the manga

The manga made its debut in Weekly Shonen Magazine in 2017. The author was Negi Haruba, then aged 26. It was his first major commercial and critical success.

The original title in Japanese is "Go-tobun no hanayome", which translates as "the bride in five equal parts".

The manga was published in fourteen tankobon volumes and has been adapted for the screen, as well as for a puzzle-style video game. In 2022 the anime film adaptation, directed by Keiichiro Ochi, was released. It is a sequel to the TV anime that was produced between 2019 and 2021, and contains original material.

Don't wait any longer: dive into this hilarious and romantic adventure now, check out the various chapters of this TBS animated series, based on the best-selling manga by Kodansha, and discover the mysteries surrounding the Nakano and Futaro sisters.

The art of conflict

Futaro, our main character, is a child of conflict. He has lost his mother and lives with his heavily indebted father and his sister. He has no friends and concentrates on his schoolwork and his good grades, which earn him the attention of the new arrival in class... Itsuki Nakano. The most studious of the sisters, she asks him for help with his studies, but Futaro nonchalantly says no...

Ironically, his sister then informs him that a rich family is looking for a tutor and can pay him handsomely. Futaro needs the money to help his father pay off his debts and hopefully lift himself out of poverty. What a surprise when he goes to the house and finds Itsuki... and his four twin sisters! Itsuki immediately refuses Futaro's presence, and his sisters follow suit, except for Yotsuba, who likes to help others and must always distinguish herself from the others. Futaro has to find the courage to assert himself, and rack his brains to find a way of winning the Nakano sisters' trust.
