An instant success until today

Attack of the Titans (進撃の巨人), Shingeki no Kyojin in Japanese, often abbreviated as "SNK", is a manga belonging to the shōnen category. Yet, it is clear that its audience does not remain stuck in the box of young male teenagers. Thanks to the multitude of themes that can be found in the story as well as its way of mixing genres, SNK is above all a manga that federates, with messages that have a universal scope. In fact, it ranks among the top 5 best-selling manga in the world in 2021.

The genesis of the SNK universe

A hundred years ago, the Titans, gigantic humanoids with a taste for human flesh, almost decimated the entire human race. These very impressive creatures can range in size from two or three metres to several dozen metres in height.

Although humanoid, they do not seem to have any real intelligence and eat humans more for pleasure than for food, as they can survive without eating. This is why the humans who survived the Titans' assault decided to protect themselves on a precise perimeter by erecting several levels of walls, so high that even the tallest Titan could not see what was hiding on the other side. This is how humans survived until the time when we discover the universe, 100 years later.

The beginnings

The story begins in a nameless tranquillity, the inhabitants of the walls haven't seen Titans prowling the outskirts of the city for over a hundred years. We discover the character of Eren Jäger, a little boy of about 9 years old, very surly, accompanied by his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman and his friend Armin Arlelt. Eren and Mikasa live peacefully with their parents in Shiganshina, a town on the edge of the Maria Wall.

However, things are about to change when a colossal Titan manages to breach the wall, allowing a wave of Titans to infiltrate and killing hundreds of people. Eren and Mikasa witness a traumatic scene when their mother is eaten in front of them as they escape to another city.

Eren's father, who was out of town at the time, is missing. However, he appears to Eren the night before the tragic events and gives him the key to the basement of their house, informing Eren that he will find essential information about the Titans there.

Eren vows to take his revenge and, accompanied by Mikasa and Armin, they enter the Exploration Battalion, which is the elite section of humanity's soldiers, trained to fight and kill Titans outside the walls.

The characters

As the years go by, the child Eren gradually becomes an impulsive, violent, determined and, above all, idealistic young man who dreams of eradicating every Titan on Earth.

With time, we also discover little by little where Mikasa comes from, a young woman incredibly talented in combat and whose calm personality serves as a balance to Eren's impulsive character. She shows little of her feelings, but remains strongly attached to Eren and Armin who represent, for her, her true family.

As for Armin, he becomes the little genius of the gang, although very fearful at the beginning, he learns to use his head to become a complex and extremely strategic character.

Even if Eren is the main protagonist of this manga, there are many main and secondary characters whose stories are as intriguing as they are captivating and this is also the beauty of Hajime Isayama's work.
