A manga like no other

Fairy Tail, literally translated as "Fairy Tail" is a shonen manga that has gained fame since its pre-publication in the weekly Weekly Shonen Magazine between 2006 and 2017 in Japan. It is drawn by Hiro Mashima. The manga was a great success and was quickly adapted into an animated series with no less than 328 episodes. There are also two animated films.

Fairy Tail, what is it about?

The story takes place in the Kingdom of Fiore. In this Kingdom, men and women are gifted with magic and live among normal people. To avoid chaos and to control these mages, there are guilds in which the mages meet. These guilds are headed by the council of magic. They also provide several services to mages and give different clients the possibility to find the right mage for the right task. The Fairy Tail is one of these guilds and is particularly well known for the way in which it operates.

In the course of the adventure, we follow the missions of several members of this guild: Lucy, Natsu, Happy, Ezra and Grey. The story first focuses on Lucy, a teenage witch who dreams of joining this legendary guild. She first meets Natsu and Happy who are on a mission to find Natsu's adopted father. It is by saving Lucy from a kidnapping that Natsu will propose her to join the guild.

Inspirations for the manga

Hiro Mashima was strongly inspired by France to tell the story of Fairy Tail. The Kaldia Cathedral in Magnolia was inspired by the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris for example. He explains that his idea when drawing his work was that you should find the atmosphere of the Parisian capital during each reading.

Fairy Tail, as its name suggests, is a play on the word fairy tale. The work thus contains all the fantasy universe that has made the genre so successful, such as dragons. However, here, the function and powers of the dragons are much more extensive, as they can, for example, breathe something other than fire. A complete collection to discover in our manga shop

Differences between manga and anime

The anime follows the storyline of the manga particularly well. But it is completed by off-series episodes. An ingenious idea that allows the creator of the manga to get a head start on the writing and drawing of the latter. As the anime is broadcast at a steady pace, it could well exceed the manga's production. The author wants to avoid this at all costs by adding episodes outside the series.

Scenes are thus lengthened and new narrative arcs are created, such as the arc The Key to the Starry Sky or the arc Eclipse of the Star Spirits. The author still contributes a minimum to the story and the rendering of these additional story arcs, but to a lesser extent.

In graphic terms, the anime also differs from the original manga. For example, we notice that a circle of light surrounds the characters when they use magic in the anime. This was totally absent in the manga. The characters themselves are not exactly similar to those of the manga. They are notably younger. There is also a more present censorship effect in the anime version where blood and scenes of a more sexual nature are limited.

From episode 176 onwards, the creators try to get even closer to the original work in terms of design and image.

Fairy Tail merchandise

Like many shonen manga, Fairy Tail has had many merchandising items that fans enjoy. For example, there are CDs, albums and DVDs of the works, but also video games, the latest of which was released in 2020 on PS4. There are also artbooks, numerous guides on the history of manga, light novels and spin-off series. Not forgetting the traditional key rings, puzzles, towels and numerous figurines.
