Captain America: a legendary superhero in the colours of America

The Marvel superhero was born during the Second World War and was destined to defend the colours of the American flag. Also a founding character and leading member of the Avengers, Captain America has made no fewer than 14 screen appearances since 1940, in series, films and TV adaptations. While he owes his success to his superpowers and the great values he upholds, he has become more human over the years, evolving in step with contemporary society and the people who make it up, and increasingly questioning the American political system and its justice.

As the Second World War broke out, authors Jack Kirby and Joe Simon wanted to give life and substance to a patriotic hero, a character ready to move to protect his country, defend its colours and its honour. It was in December 1940 that this superhero-soldier made his appearance in the comic book Captain America Comics. It was a first in print, and sold over a million copies. Captain America tells the story of a rather frail and reserved young man who dreams of joining the American army to fight the Nazis on behalf of the Allies. Steven Grant Rogers, excluded from military service and seeing his dreams go up in smoke, does not give up, however, and joins a revolutionary experimental programme in which Professor Erskine, touched by his determination, transforms him into a supersoldier. Captain America was born to fight a Nazi organisation and save prisoners of war.

An omnipresent patriotism

There's no getting around his love of the United States. From the suit in the colours of the American flag to the shield surrounded by red and white stripes, marked with a white star on a blue background, everything is a reminder of his country. Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, fights to defend his country and its interests, no matter how difficult his mission, no matter the enemies and no matter how tough the fight. Courageous, determined, charismatic and trustworthy, he embodies the ideal saviour, the perfect vigilante, all nicely wrapped up in a superhero costume with superpowers. Speed and stamina are his hallmarks, as is a keen knowledge of combat sports. Nazism, Communism, terrorism... his adventures have seen him fight some memorable battles.

Those who bring him to life on screen

American actors have been donning the fabulous Captain America costume since the 1940s. After Dick Purcell (1944), Reb Brown (1979) and Matt Salinger (1990), it's Chris Evans' turn to take on the role and, at the same time, see his acting career take off. Best known for his portrayal of another Marvel hero in The Fantastic Four (Johnny Storm), he will be taking part in the new film trilogy that begins with the feature film Captain America: First Avenger. Like his character, Chris Evans has a certain patriotic streak, and in 2020 he will be launching "A Starting Point", a video site dedicated to American politics. This initiative will enable elected representatives from all political camps to set out their points of view and argue them in 2-minute mini-videos. The aim? To inform, raise awareness and bring together the country's voters, who are more divided than ever.
