Board games have been making a comeback in recent years. And for good reason, creators are becoming more and more inventive. But what exactly do we mean when we talk about board games? What is a board game?

Board games are table games that usually use pieces. These pieces are moved or shifted on a pre-marked board (a playing surface) and often include elements such as a table, cards, role-playing games, miniature games.

Many board games involve competition between two or more players. Players can win, for example, by capturing all the opponent's pieces or by reaching a specific final score. It can also be played in teams.

A variety of board games

Of course, there are lots of varieties of board games. Their representation of real-life situations can vary depending on the presence of an intrinsic theme or narrative elements. Cluedo comes to mind in the latter case. The rules can be very simple as in Snakes and Ladders or more complex as in Advanced Squad Leader. The game pieces often include customised figures or tokens of specific shapes. Cards and dice are also available. Please check out all our card games.

Learning the rules

The time required to learn and master the rules of the game can vary greatly from one game to another. But this is not necessarily related to the number or complexity of the rules. For example, chess has very simple rules, but requires some strategic learning.

Around the year 2000, the board game industry started to produce many new board games. The audience continued to grow globally.
