Character background and lore

Undertaker is one of the most mysterious characters in the Black Butler universe. Behind his eccentric appearance as an undertaker lies a former Shinigami, or god of death. The official Black Butler: Public School Arc website directly confirms his former status as a Shinigami.

He first appears as an informant within London’s underworld. Thanks to his knowledge of the dead, criminal affairs and the secrets of the underworld, he collaborates on several occasions with Ciel Phantomhive and his demonic butler, Sebastian Michaelis.

His behaviour is particularly baffling. Undertaker loves to laugh and is constantly theatrical, to the point where he sometimes prefers a good joke to money in exchange for his information. This whimsical façade, however, conceals an extremely dangerous character.

His true nature is gradually revealed as the story unfolds. As a former Shinigami, Undertaker possesses supernatural abilities far superior to those of an ordinary human and is skilled in the use of the tools characteristic of the gods of death.

He also harbours a deep fascination with death and the boundaries that separate the living from the dead. This obsession leads him to conduct experiments designed to artificially prolong the existence of bodies after death.

The official website confirms that he is behind the Bizarre Dolls – literally corpses capable of moving once more thanks to his experiments.

This research transforms Undertaker from a former eccentric ally into a far more unsettling figure. His motives remain difficult to fathom for a long time, particularly as he has deep ties to the Phantomhive family and appears to harbour many secrets relating to his past.

In the Black Butler: Public School Arc, Undertaker thus remains a mysterious presence whose influence far exceeds that of a mere informant. The official website notes that he had previously cooperated with Sebastian and Ciel before pursuing his own experiments.
