Origin and world of the character
The character of SpongeBob SquarePants is the protagonist of the American animated series of the same name, created by animator and marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg in 1999 for the Nickelodeon channel. The series is set in the aquatic community of Bikini Bottom, at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. SpongeBob SquarePants is a squared-off sea sponge with an abundance of optimism and childlike naivety, who works passionately as a cook at the Krusty Krab, the town's most popular restaurant. Surrounded by his faithful friend Starfish Patrick and his grumpy neighbour Carlo Tentacule, his daily adventures turn the simplest tasks into zany and memorable situations, making him one of the most universal and popular icons of contemporary pop culture.
