The first part depicts a Mind Flayer clad in a long, dark robe adorned with silver plates, chains and occult motifs. Its purple head extends into four characteristic tentacles, whilst its hands are raised in a pose suggesting the use of its psychic powers. At its feet lie bones, skulls and a small cerebral creature, reinforcing the scene’s macabre atmosphere.

The second half is dominated by an enormous organic brain criss-crossed with purple veins and surrounded by black growths. It rests in a vat decorated with metallic reliefs, teeth and unsettling symbols, whilst long, dark-red appendages coil around the rocky structure. The two elements are visually linked by a backdrop of stalagmites evoking an underground cavern.

Crafted from resin and painted in numerous shades of purple, red, grey and silver, this piece combines storage functionality with a truly fantastical diorama. Origin and lore of the creatures

Mind Flayers, also known as illithids, are among the most feared psionic creatures in Dungeons & Dragons. They live primarily in the Underdark, a vast network of caverns beneath the surface, where they establish colonies organised around a Venerable Brain. Their tentacled faces and powerful mental abilities allow them to subjugate other beings and turn them into servants.

Illithids feed on the brains of their victims and can create new members of their species through a process known as ceremorphosis. An illithid tadpole is implanted into a humanoid host, where it gradually devours the host’s brain before completely transforming the body.

At the centre of each colony there is usually a Venerable Brain. Submerged in a vat of brine, this colossal being telepathically connects with the Mind Flayers under its influence, gathers their knowledge and coordinates their actions. It thus constitutes the supreme authority and the collective memory of the illithid community.

This bookend illustrates precisely this relationship of domination: the Mind Flayer acts as a member of the colony, whilst the gigantic brain placed beside it embodies the central intelligence that directs and oversees all its servants.
