Origin and background of the licence (Lore)
Released in 1984, *Gremlins* tells the story of Billy Peltzer, who receives a strange little creature called Gizmo for Christmas. Gizmo belongs to the Mogwai species, endearing creatures but subject to several very specific rules: avoid bright light, do not get them wet and, above all, never feed them after midnight.
When these rules are broken, Gizmo accidentally gives birth to several Mogwais with a far less peaceful temperament. After eating after midnight, they transform into Gremlins – turbulent, destructive and dangerous creatures that plunge the small town of Kingston Falls into chaos.
The film thus blends black comedy, fantasy and horror, whilst contrasting Gizmo’s gentle nature with the Gremlins’ anarchic behaviour. Its aesthetic and its creatures, created using practical effects, played a major part in making the franchise a staple of 1980s popular culture.
This set of 18 cm Gremlins bookends brings this cult universe to life in an object that is both functional and decorative, particularly suited to a bookshelf dedicated to fantasy films, horror or classic retro franchises.
