Origin and lore of the Hogwarts Houses

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry divides its pupils into four houses founded by Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff. On arrival, the young wizards are sorted by the Sorting Hat according to their personality, abilities and the qualities they value.

Gryffindor, represented by a lion, values courage, daring and determination. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, amongst others, belong to this house.

Slytherin, symbolised by a snake, values ambition, cunning and initiative. Its members include Draco Malfoy, and it once counted Tom Riddle amongst its pupils.

Ravenclaw, represented by an eagle, emphasises intelligence, creativity and curiosity. Luna Lovegood and Cho Chang are among its best-known members.

Hufflepuff, whose emblem is the badger, values loyalty, patience, hard work and fairness. Cedric Diggory and Norbert Dragonneau are associated with this house.
