Character background and lore

Hatsune Miku is a virtual singer developed by Crypton Future Media. She is one of the Piapro Characters, alongside Kagamine Rin, Kagamine Len, Megurine Luka, MEIKO and KAITO.

The original Hatsune Miku software was launched on 31 August 2007. It allows users to make their computer sing by entering lyrics and a melody, thereby transforming Miku into a true digital music-making instrument.

Her voice is based on that of the Japanese actress Saki Fujita, whilst her original design is by KEI. Crypton presents her as a virtual singer with a pop and futuristic aesthetic, recognisable in particular by her long turquoise pigtails.

Hatsune Miku quickly outgrew her initial status as mere music software. Creators from all over the world began using her voice and image to produce songs, illustrations, music videos, animations and performances.

This participatory aspect lies at the heart of the Piapro Characters’ identity. Crypton explains that the term ‘Piapro’ derives from the concept of peer production, whereby creators pool their skills to collectively bring new works to life.
