Origin and background of the character

Hatsune Miku is a virtual singer whose voice is generated using voice synthesis software. Her name can be interpreted as ‘the first sound of the future’, a name that reflects her identity as a digital musical character.

She is generally depicted as a young artist with very long turquoise pigtails, dressed in an outfit combining a school uniform, electronic styling and futuristic elements. Her number 01 reflects her place amongst the first characters in the Character Vocal range developed by Crypton Future Media.

Unlike a heroine from a single narrative, Hatsune Miku is shaped by the creations of her community. Composers, illustrators, animators and artists can use her voice and appearance to develop their own songs, music videos and visual worlds.
