Character background and lore

Gen Narumi is the captain of the First Division of Japan’s Anti-Kaiju Defence Force. The anime’s official website describes him as the most powerful man in the Defence Force and the leader of its most formidable unit.

He truly comes to the fore after Kafka Hibino is placed under the Defence Force’s supervision due to his identity as Kaiju No. 8. Kafka and Kikoru Shinomiya are then assigned to the First Division, led by Narumi.

Narumi has a deliberately contrasting personality. In everyday life, he may appear nonchalant and unconcerned with rules of etiquette or discipline. Once on the battlefield, however, he becomes a fighter of exceptional focus and efficiency.

Above all, he expects one thing from his subordinates: results and genuine power. This philosophy fits perfectly with his status as captain of the division considered to be the strongest in the organisation.

His combat prowess has earned him the official title of the Defence Force’s most powerful fighter. Season 2 quickly puts this reputation to the test when Narumi himself faces an appearance by Kaiju No. 9, whilst Kafka and Kikoru battle another threat from the same enemy.
