Origin and lore

Middle-earth is the main geographical setting in which *The Hobbit* and *The Lord of the Rings*, J.R.R. Tolkien’s best-known works, are set. This imaginary world is populated by numerous peoples and cultures, including Hobbits, Elves, Dwarves and Men, and comprises regions that have become iconic, such as the Shire, Rohan, Gondor and Mordor. Tolkien attached particular importance to the geography of his world and revised numerous maps to ensure the consistency of the journeys and the chronology of his narrative.

The main plot of *The Lord of the Rings* centres on the War of the Ring. The Hobbit Frodo Baggins, accompanied notably by Sam Gamgee, must travel across much of Middle-earth to Mordor in order to destroy the One Ring – the instrument of power of the Dark Lord Sauron – in the fires of Mount Doom.
