The goblet depicts Victoria within an ogival frame reminiscent of the windows and doors of a Victorian chapel. Her portrait is surrounded by candles, delicate flowers, grey arabesques and a red heart. A banner bearing the inscription ‘Victoria Everglot’ highlights the character, whilst the mauve stone walls reinforce the sombre and refined atmosphere of the piece.

The back of the goblet features a large black rose window, surrounded by candles and foliage. The stem takes the form of a dark column around which grey ribbons and a golden ring—symbolising a marriage vow—are wound. Small candles arranged around the base extend the ceremonial décor right down to the lower section.

Character background and lore

Victoria Everglot is the young woman whom Victor Van Dort is to marry as part of an arranged marriage between their two families. Born into an aristocratic family that has fallen on hard times, she grew up in a strict and austere environment, under the authority of parents more concerned with their social status than with her happiness.

Despite the circumstances of their meeting, Victoria and Victor quickly develop a sincere affection for one another. Both are shy, sensitive and bound by their families’ expectations. Their relationship contrasts with the more extravagant world of the Land of the Dead, where Victor finds himself accidentally betrothed to Emily after exchanging vows before what he believes to be a tree branch.

Victoria represents the world of the living, but also the possibility of a love that is chosen rather than imposed. Although she is less exuberant than Emily, she shows determination as she tries to understand Victor’s disappearance and to resist the decisions made on her behalf.

The candles, hearts, golden ring and chapel motifs featured on this goblet are a direct reference to the wedding at the heart of the story. They emphasise Victoria’s place in this romantic triangle, where promises, family duties and true feelings link the world of the living to that of the dead.
