Scratchy is the star cat of *The Itchy & Scratchy Show*, the fictional cartoon regularly watched by Bart and Lisa in *The Simpsons*. The series parodies classic cartoons centred on a cat-and-mouse rivalry, but deliberately takes the violence and absurdity to extremes.

In almost every episode, Scratchy plays the role of the hapless victim at the hands of Itchy, the cunning and particularly aggressive mouse. The gags generally revolve around an escalation of increasingly implausible situations, in which Scratchy endures all manner of grotesque misadventures.

Over the course of the series, Itchy & Scratchy has become a programme within a programme, used by the writers to parody the animation industry, censorship, television and the conventions of traditional cartoons.
