Character origin and backstory (Lore)Created in 1962 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the pages of the comic book *Amazing Fantasy* #15, Peter Parker is a shy, science-loving schoolboy who is bitten by a radioactive spider. This bite grants him superhuman powers, including strength proportional to that of a spider, agility, the ability to cling to walls, and a precognitive sense known as the ‘spider-sense’. Haunted by the tragic loss of his Uncle Ben – a death he might have prevented – the young man adopts the identity of Spider-Man and vows to use his abilities in the service of justice, guided by the timeless maxim: ‘With great power comes great responsibility’. An unwavering protector of New York City, he is affectionately nicknamed the ‘friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man’ by the citizens he saves every day.
