Origin and background of the ship

In One Piece, the Going Merry is the Straw Hat crew’s first real ship. It is given to Luffy and his companions following the events at Syrup Village, and accompanies them throughout much of their early adventures.

The ship is recognisable by its ram-shaped figurehead and its warm, welcoming appearance. Far more than just a means of transport, it gradually becomes a full member of the crew and plays a particularly important role in the story.
