Origin and character lore

Mew is a Mythical Psychic-type Pokémon introduced in the first generation. Extremely rare, it is described in the Pokémon universe as a mysterious creature whose DNA is said to contain the genetic information of all Pokémon.

Endowed with remarkable intelligence and great curiosity, Mew is capable of learning a very wide variety of abilities. It generally prefers to remain hidden and only reveals itself to those it deems trustworthy, which has largely contributed to its status as a legendary Pokémon amongst fans.

Mew also plays a major role in the story of Mewtwo, who was artificially created from Mew’s genetic material. This relationship is central to the first major Pokémon film, in which the two creatures represent two opposing views on the power and origin of Pokémon.
