Origin and character lore

Squirtle is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in the first generation. It is one of the three Pokémon offered to the player at the start of the adventure in the Kanto region, alongside Bulbasaur and Charmander.

Recognisable by its small brown shell and blue body, Squirtle mainly uses water-based attacks. Its shell also serves as protection and plays an important role in several of its defensive moves.

As it evolves, Squirtle becomes Wartortle, then Blastoise, a much more massive Pokémon equipped with powerful water cannons built into its shell.

Thanks to its status as a long-standing starter Pokémon and its prominent presence in video games, the animated series and merchandise, Squirtle has become one of the most recognisable and beloved Pokémon in the entire franchise.
