CHARACTER BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT
Introduced to the big screen by Paul Verhoeven in 1987, Alex Murphy is an honest police officer transferred to Detroit, a dystopian metropolis plagued by crime and controlled by the multinational Omni Consumer Products (OCP). After being fatally wounded in the line of duty by a gang of criminals, his body is recovered by OCP to serve as the biological basis for the ‘RoboCop’ project. Stripped of his original memories, he becomes a heavily armoured police cyborg programmed to enforce strict directives. The film’s plot explores his quest for identity and the resurgence of his humanity and original memories beneath the titanium armour.
