Character background and universe (Lore)

Sung Jinwoo is the main protagonist of Solo Leveling. At the start of the story, he is an E-rank Hunter, considered so weak that he is nicknamed ‘the weakest of humanity’. The anime’s official website confirms that he initially belongs to the lowest rank and that his life changes following the incident involving the mysterious double dungeon.

The world of Solo Leveling is characterised by the appearance of Gates – portals connecting the real world to dungeons populated by monsters. Some humans then awaken to supernatural abilities and become Hunters, tasked with exploring these dungeons and eliminating the creatures within them.

Unlike other Hunters, whose abilities normally remain virtually static after their awakening, Jinwoo gains access to a mysterious System following the double dungeon – a System that only he can see.

By completing the missions set by this System, he can boost his stats, acquire new skills and become ever more powerful. This unique ability to ‘level up’ lies at the very heart of his evolution.

From raid to raid, Jinwoo thus gradually transforms his body, his reflexes and his combat abilities. The man who was once considered a burden becomes capable of completing extremely dangerous dungeons on his own.

This progression is eventually officially recognised when a new ranking places him as Korea’s tenth S-rank Hunter. The anime devotes episode 19 entirely to this revelation.

His evolution takes on a new dimension when he successfully completes a class-change quest and gains the power to command shadow soldiers, abilities that subsequently become one of the character’s visual and narrative hallmarks.

Despite this spectacular rise to power, Jinwoo remains deeply motivated by his family. One of his key priorities is to find a way to save his mother, which leads him into new battles and forces him to continue pushing his own limits.
