Five Nights at Freddy, mystery and horror

The Five Nights at Freddy phenomenon began in 2014 with a video game directed by Scott Cawthon. In the survival horror genre, the games and spin-offs are essentially based on a basic concept: a character must survive in a confined space in the face of animatronics with murderous impulses. But behind simple survival lies a mysterious story of imprisoned souls and curses.

The first game in the saga

The very first game, Five Nights at Freddy, came out in 2014 and was a point-and-click game: the player had to interact with the environment of the central character by clicking on various objects and devices. The character in question, Mike Schmidt, is the night watchman at a pizzeria that uses animatronics to entertain its customers. Animatronics are robots in the shape of animals. But Mike receives a call from a mysterious character nicknamed Phone Guy, who warns him that the animatronics are causing problems at night. The animatronics mistake humans for endoskeletons and make it their mission to get Mike into an animatronic suit... which can't be very pleasant, as the suits contain all sorts of mechanisms and crossbars. So Mike has to survive the night against the animatronics Bonnie, Chica, Foxie and Freddy. Mike is locked in the surveillance room and can monitor the robots' movements using the cameras. He can control the lights, and is protected by the room's armoured doors. But obviously, it would be too easy just to close the doors. This is more of a management game, because the player can only activate one element at a time. What's more, the player loses battery power with each action. If the battery drops to zero, the robot Freddy appears and ends the game (game over). The goal: survive five nights (and Freddy appears from night 4). Plus two bonus nights.

A long franchise

While the game's premise remains fairly limited, players have noticed some disturbing details, such as newspaper cuttings about missing children. So there are mysteries that aren't solved at the end of the first game. Subsequent games gradually reveal the truth.

There are 3 numbered sequels. They feature more and more animatronics, in particular Springtrap. In the 3rd opus, we discover that Springtrap is actually a sort of reincarnation of a serial killer, Willam Afton, who died trapped inside the Springlock suit. He had kidnapped and killed children before hiding their bodies in the first animatronics. But their souls took possession of the robots and they tried to eliminate Willam Afton, who took refuge in a suit... which closed in on him due to humidity. After the basic series of games, several others were released, taking place in different locations, or with different gameplays:

  • Five Nights at Freddy 4 (2015): taking place in a child's bedroom
  • Five Night's at Freddy: Sister Location (2016), where the character is supposed to programme the animatronics so that they work during the day
  • Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator (2017), taking place in the original pizzeria, and where the player takes on the role of the owners. He has to develop the pizzeria, while managing the villainous animatronics (notably Scraptrap, who is Springtrap with a different costume).
  • Ultimate Custom Night (2018), this game doesn't follow directly on from the others, and seems to have William Afton as the protagonist. He's trapped in a giant trap with 50 animatronics.
  • From 2019, the games in the FnaF (for Five Nights at Freddy) franchise will take on very different aspects. The originals are reworked in virtual reality in Five Nights at Freddy: Help Wanted (2019). Free-roam is introduced in 2021 with Five Nights at Freddy: Security Breach. Spin-offs began in 2016 with FnaF World, an RPG, Freddy in Space 2 (2019), a horizontal platform shooter, and Security Breach: Fury's Rage (2021), a beat'em up.

    Books and films

The story behind the FnaF events is explored and developed through several series of books. The first series is written by Scott Cawthon and Kira Breed-Wrisley, beginning with Five Nights at Freddy: The Silver Eyes. These novels were later adapted into graphic novels, ending with the film released in 2023, directed by Emma Tammi and starring Josh Hutcherson, Matthew Lillard, Elizabeth Lail and Piper Rubio. It tells the story of Mike Schmidt, whose brother was kidnapped one day, who has to look after his little sister Abby, and at the same time earn a living as a security guard at Freddy Fazbear's pizzeria. Strangely enough, the animatronics start by doing him a "favour", as Abby's babysitter, on the orders of her wicked aunt, comes with her brother and his friends to vandalise the pizzeria in the hope that this will cost Mike his job, and allow the aunt to possess Abby for herself. The animatronics provide a rather gruesome end for the vandals... but the mystery thickens when they seem to become friends with Abby thanks to her drawings.
