Fire Force, all fire
In an alternative future world, hotly post-apocalyptic, a global fire has caused the destruction of virtually all humanity. One of the few places to survive is Tokyo, transformed into the Tokyo Empire. People with pyrokinetic powers form the Fire Force, with the aim of combating the spontaneous combustion phenomena that are multiplying and threatening what's left of the world.
Shinra, the hero with feet of fire
In this manga created by Atsushi Ohkubo and published in Kondansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine, we follow the adventures of young Shinra. This young man has pyrokinetic powers, which means he can control fire from a distance. In particular, he can produce flames with his feet, which even enables him to fly. But he also believes that his powers are responsible for the fire that killed his mother and brother Sho twelve years ago. The heroine joins Fire Force's 8th brigade, along with other young men and women with powers: Tamaki Kotatsu, Takehisa Hinawa, Maki Oze, Arthur Boyle, and Captain Akitaru Obi, who lacks powers but is no less respected. The team is reinforced by Iris, a nun from the Church of the Holy Sun, and Victor Licht, a scientist.
Spontaneous combustion
The phenomenon of spontaneous combustion is based on real, documented incidents. It can indeed happen that, under fairly specific conditions, a human being catches fire and is consumed very quickly, well before help can intervene. In the cases documented, the victims were often alcoholics and smokers, and most of the time the self-combustion occurred after death (revealed by the absence of soot in their lungs). It would appear that a cigarette set fire to their alcohol-soaked clothing. Then, when the temperature reaches 250°C, the subcutaneous human fat catches fire in turn, burning off a large part of the body... until the fat runs out. But in general, the fire completely destroys the cigarette that may have caused it, so this description of the process is only a theory. In the Fire Force manga, it is revealed that spontaneous combustion phenomena are caused by a kind of sect, the White Clad. The members of this sect worship the Great Preacher, a mysterious figure who is believed to be responsible for the global conflagration known as The Great Cataclysm. He wants to complete his work and burn the remains of the world to transform our planet into a new sun. The White Clad sect is made up of people with pyrokinetic powers, and has infiltrated all levels of power, including some of the 7 Fire Force brigades.
The eighth Fire Force brigade
Shinra joins this famous 8th Fire Force brigade. Considered atypical and weak, this brigade has been given an additional role, in addition to combating spontaneous combustion. It has to investigate the causes of these phenomena and, in particular, keep an eye on the other seven brigades to spot any traitors belonging to the White Clad. Shinra and Arthur are sent to infiltrate the 1st Fire Force brigade, led by Leonardo Barns, Karim Fulham and Rekka Hoshimiya. This brigade is entirely dependent on the Church of the Holy Sun and even has its HQ in a cathedral. Most of the brigades depend on a specific organisation. For example, the 2nd brigade reports to the army, while the 3rd brigade reports to Haijima Industries. Its captain is the mysterious Doctor Giovanni, who always hides behind a mask, and who shows very little compassion for the human torch victims... which makes him a prime suspect! Conflicts break out between the different brigades, leading to numerous action scenes. Our heroes from the 8th brigade not only have to save the victims of the fire, they also have to fight using their powers.
