Astérix, first Astérix le Gaulois, is a Franco-Belgian comic strip series creéée on 29 October 1959 by scénariste français René Goscinny et le dessinateur Albert Uderzo in no 1 of the Frenchçais Pilote newspaper. After the death of René Goscinny in 1977, Albert Uderzo continued the série alone, then handed over the reins in 2013 à Jean-Yves Ferri and Didier Conrad.

The story is set in 50 BC (shortly after the Roman conquest) and tells the story of a small Gallic village in Armorique;who continue to fight alone against the invaders thanks to a magic potion prepared by the druid, a drink that gives superhuman strength to anyone who drinks it. The main characters are the warrior Astérix and the menhir delivery man Obélix, tasked by the village with disrupting the Romans'plans or going to support anyone who asks for help against the Roman Républic.

Published in Pilote de 1959 à1973, the series was released in parallel as a hardback album; The first twenty-four albums were first published by Dargaud, then from 1998 by Hachette, and finally by Albert Renaud for the following ten albums. Cumulative sales of the albums, translated into one hundred and seven languages, amount to 350 million copies, making it the best-selling European comic strip in the world.

The series is above all humorous and mainly parodies contemporary French society; through its stéréotypes and its régionalisms, as well as the emblematic traditions and customs of foreign countries. There's plenty of comic relief, including a pirate shipwreck. As for the drawing, it is semi-realistic, heavily inspired by the Marcinelle school.
