Character background and lore

Reisalin Stout, nicknamed Ryza, is the main heroine of *Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout* and its sequels.

At the start of her story, Ryza is introduced as an ordinary young girl living on the island of Kurken. Energetic, adventurous and with a strong sense of justice, she finds the monotony of her daily life hard to bear and dreams of discovering what lies beyond her island. Koei Tecmo aptly describes her as a wild-spirited, tomboyish young girl, whose convictions are sometimes hard to change.

Her life is turned on its head when she discovers alchemy and meets the alchemist Empel Vollmer. Ryza then begins to learn this art, which allows her to combine different materials to create new objects, equipment and tools.

Alchemy quickly becomes much more than just a hobby: it enables her to set off on adventures with her friends, explore ruins, gather ingredients and solve various mysteries surrounding her island.

Over the course of the trilogy, Ryza evolves from a teenager in search of adventure into an experienced alchemist. The subsequent instalments find her several years later, as she continues her research and regularly reunites with her former companions for new expeditions.

The Atelier Ryza series stands out in particular for its warm, summery atmosphere, its emphasis on friendship, and its alchemy system, in which gathering materials and crafting items take centre stage.

Ryza, however, still retains the same love of adventure. Even as she becomes a much more experienced alchemist, she is still portrayed as cheerful, spontaneous and constantly drawn to new discoveries.
