Origin and lore

Released in 1985, Back to the Future is a science-fiction film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Zemeckis and Bob Gale. The story follows Marty McFly, a teenager from Hill Valley who accidentally finds himself transported from 1985 to 1955 in a DeLorean converted into a time machine by his friend, the eccentric Dr Emmett ‘Doc’ Brown.

Once in the past, Marty unwittingly disrupts the meeting between his future parents, thereby threatening his own existence. He must then set the course of events right with the help of Doc Brown from 1955, whilst searching for a way to provide the DeLorean with the energy needed to return to 1985. This contrast between the two eras lies at the heart of the first film and explains the prominent feature of the year ‘85 in this jumper’s design.

The DeLorean has become one of the franchise’s key symbols. Recognisable by its stainless-steel bodywork and the modifications added by Doc Brown, it accompanies Marty on his journeys through different time periods throughout the trilogy. The large technical diagram printed on the back of this design thus places the time machine squarely at the centre of the design.
