In the universe of *Batman Beyond*, an animated series which first aired in 1999, Bruce Wayne has retired as Batman after his ageing body no longer allows him to fulfil the role to the full. He then becomes the mentor to a new vigilante, Terry McGinnis, whom he guides from afar from his mansion whilst remaining committed to his fight against crime in the futuristic Gotham City.
