Character background and lore

Ciel Phantomhive is the young head of the prestigious Phantomhive family. Despite being only 13 years old, he runs the family business, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of toys and confectionery within the series’ universe. The official profile for Black Butler: Public School Arc directly confirms his age, his status as head of the family and his role at the helm of the Phantomhive company.

But behind this public role lies a far darker function. Ciel acts as the ‘Queen’s watchdog’, tasked with investigating crimes, conspiracies and affairs that threaten the order of the British underworld.

To carry out these missions, he can rely on his butler, Sebastian Michaelis. Sebastian appears to be the perfect servant, capable of carrying out virtually any order with extraordinary efficiency.

This perfection, however, has a supernatural origin: Sebastian is in fact a demon with whom Ciel has entered into a contract in order to pursue his revenge. The anime’s official website directly confirms Sebastian’s demonic nature and the existence of this pact.
