- Catan: Pirates & Discoverers is the fourth major expansion for Catan (after Sailors, Cities & Knights and Barbarians & Merchants) and includes five scenarios and three missions; some of the scenarios make use of missions and others do not.Catan: Pirates & Discoverers differs from the basic Catan game in three main ways. Firstly, instead of having a single island in the game on which players build and compete for resources, there are three islands - but the landscape of only one of these islands is known at the start of the game. Players start on this island, then build ships and bring in settlers so that they can then travel to new lands. When a ship ends its move on an unexplored territory, that hex is revealed and a randomly drawn token is placed there, with the player gaining a resource as a reward - assuming the hex produces resources. (The number of unknown tiles varies from 16 to 32, depending on the scenario.) A settler and a ship can be turned into a port colony, from which roads and new ships can be built to allow further exploration.Secondly, instead of using cities, Catan: Pirates & Discoverers allows players to build port colonies for two corn and two minerals, with a port colony providing a resource when the adjacent number is obtained at the start of a turn. Like cities, port settlements are worth two victory points (VPs), and the number of VPs required to win depends on the scenario.Thirdly, if a player receives no resources during the production roll (other than a 7), he receives one gold in compensation. Two gold coins can be exchanged with the bank for a resource of the player's choice. Gold also has other uses, such as helping you escape pirates. The five scenarios included in Catan: Explorers and Pirates are:
- Explore the seas of Catania and discover two new islands to expand your colonies. Once you've discovered an island, you'll need to use ships to transport settlers from one island to another and colonise distant lands. (Introductory scenario)
- In this scenario, pirates prowl the seas with your trading ships. Pay tribute to the pirates or hunt them down, then find and capture their lairs to earn gold and VPs! (Mission scenario)
- Fish for Catan! The inhabitants of Catan are short of food, so it's time to go fishing in the ocean for something to eat. These are deep-sea fish, though, so you need to find their shoals first before you can catch them! The Catan Council will reward players with VPs for bringing fish back to the island, as well as for capturing pirate dens. Beware of wandering pirates, as not only will they demand gold as tribute, but they might also get to the fish before you do! (Scenario for two missions)
- In this scenario, the Catanese Council wants you to find fish and spices for the people of Catania! As before, they're rewarding the hardest-working merchant captains with VPs. To obtain spices, you'll need to make friends with the mysterious inhabitants of the Spice Islands, but in return they'll not only trade you spices, but teach you their sailing skills or even pirate combat techniques! (Scenario for two missions)
- Explorers and Pirates! This long and challenging scenario combines all the elements of the previous scenarios! Explore new lands, capture pirate hideouts, find fish, and get to know the inhabitants of the Spice Islands! (Scenario with three missions)
