Marilyn Monroe’s origins and career

Born Norma Jeane Mortenson on 1 June 1926 in Los Angeles, Marilyn Monroe became, during the 1950s, one of Hollywood’s most famous actresses and one of the most iconic figures in American popular culture.

After starting out as a model, she turned to the cinema and gradually adopted the name Marilyn Monroe. Her image as a glamorous blonde and her comic talent quickly caught the attention of Hollywood studios.

The 1950s marked her definitive rise to fame with several films that have since become classics. Notably, she played Lorelei Lee in *Gentlemen Prefer Blondes* (1953), appeared in *How to Marry a Millionaire* the same year, and became one of cinema’s most famous icons thanks to *The Seven Year Itch* in 1955.

Marilyn, however, sought to move beyond the image of a mere ‘glamorous blonde’ that was regularly imposed on her. She deepened her craft as an actress and starred in more ambitious films such as *Bus Stop* in 1956.

In 1959, she played one of her most famous roles in *Some Like It Hot*, Billy Wilder’s comedy which has become one of the great classics of American cinema. Her last completed film was *The Misfits*, released in 1961.
