Character background and universe (Lore)

Ken Takakura is a sixth-former with a passion for aliens and UFO-related phenomena. Nicknamed Okarun by Momo Ayase, he meets her when she stands up for him against classmates who are bullying him. The two teenagers soon discover that they hold opposing beliefs: Okarun believes in aliens but not in ghosts, whilst Momo believes exactly the opposite.

In order to prove their respective beliefs, they set off separately for places renowned for their paranormal activity. Okarun enters a haunted tunnel where he encounters the fearsome Turbo-Granny. Cursed by this entity, he undergoes a supernatural transformation that profoundly alters his appearance and, in particular, grants him exceptional speed.

In this form, his hair turns white and stands on end, his face takes on a sinister appearance, and his personality becomes darker and more melancholic. With Momo’s help, Okarun gradually learns to harness this power to confront ghosts, occult creatures and alien invaders. Their alliance forms the heart of *Dandadan*, a work blending action, humour, teenage romance and paranormal phenomena.
