Origin and character lore

Turbo Granny is a powerful yōkai from the Dandadan universe. The anime’s official website describes her as a supernatural entity who used to appear in unexpected places before travelling across the country at phenomenal speed.

At the start of the story, she resides in the famous Shono City tunnel, where she has become particularly dangerous by merging her power with that of a spirit bound to the place.

It is there that she crosses paths with Ken Takakura, nicknamed Okarun. He has gone into the tunnel as part of a bet he has made with Momo Ayase: Okarun believes in aliens but not in ghosts, whilst Momo believes in spirits but rejects the existence of aliens.

The encounter quickly turns into a disaster. Turbo Granny curses Okarun and, unwittingly, passes on some of her supernatural abilities to him, notably extraordinary speed and strength.

However, following the confrontation and the exorcism that ensues, her existence does not disappear completely. Her consciousness eventually becomes trapped within a small lucky cat statuette, or maneki-neko.

It is this form that is referred to in official merchandise as Turbo Granny (Beckoning Cat). The anime and its official merchandise regularly use this feline form to represent the character.

Deprived of much of her powers, Turbo Granny then becomes a recurring presence in the lives of Momo, Okarun and Seiko.

Her personality, however, does not really soften. She remains provocative, rude and extremely blunt, which creates a particularly comical contrast with her new body as a little lucky cat.

Despite her difficult attitude, she possesses a considerable knowledge of the supernatural world. Her explanations and experience gradually prove useful when the group has to face other yōkai, curses and occult phenomena.
