Doctor Who is a British science fiction television series created by Sydney Newman and Donald Wilson and broadcast on BBC One since 23 November 1963. It follows the adventures of the Doctor, who travels through space and time in a spaceship called the TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space). When the Doctor is mortally wounded, he can survive by regenerating, changing his appearance and, to a certain extent, his personality, but retaining his memories of his previous lives.
Doctor Who follows the adventures of its main character, an alien TimeLord called the Doctor. He is from the planet Gallifrey and travels in a TARDIS(Time And Relative Dimension In Space), a machine that can travel through space and time. Particularly attached to Earth, he is regularly accompanied on his journeys by companions, mostly human and female.
The Doctor's TARDIS has the appearance of a 1960s British blue police telephone box, the camouflage system (allowing it to blend in with the place and time in which it lands) having been stuck in the very first episode of the first series. The interior is larger than the object on the outside, provoking astonishment in those who enter. It is also equipped with a sonic screwdriver, a tool that has several functions, such as unlocking or repairing objects.
In the first series (1963-1989), the Doctor is just another Time Lord, while in the second series (since 2005), he presents himself as the last survivor of his race. He is said to have ended the Time War between the Daleks and the Time Lords, losing the latter in another dimension.
Like all Time Lords, the Doctor has the power to regenerate when mortally wounded. This regeneration is accompanied by changes: he is the same person, with the same memories, but with a transformed body and character. Traditionally, the different incarnations of the Doctor are referred to by their place in chronological order. For example, the "Sixth Doctor" refers to the sixth incarnation of the character.
