Character background and universe (Lore)

Rei Ayanami is one of the central characters in the Evangelion universe. A reserved and enigmatic young pilot, she is primarily associated with the Evangelion Unit-00 and works under the authority of the NERV organisation. Her aloof demeanour, her apparent difficulty in expressing her emotions and her special bond with Gendo Ikari are some of the key elements surrounding her character.

In the Rebuild of Evangelion films, Rei retains this introverted personality, but her relationship with Shinji Ikari and the world around her gradually takes on greater significance.
