Rei Ayanami is one of the central figures in the Evangelion saga. She is portrayed as the pilot ofEvangelion Unit-00 and bears the title ‘First Girl’ or ‘First Child’, depending on the version of the work. The official website forEvangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance describes her as a quiet young girl who shows very little emotion and pilots the EVA-00.

Rei immediately stands out for her extremely reserved demeanour. She speaks little, seems detached from her surroundings and, initially, has limited interaction with the other characters.

Her encounter with Shinji Ikari, however, helps her behaviour to gradually evolve. As they undertake missions together, Rei begins to show more emotion and to develop a more complex relationship with those around her.
