Character background and lore

Frieren is an elf mage who has lived for over a thousand years. She was once part of the hero Himmel’s group, alongside the priest Heiter and the warrior Eisen. Together, they managed to defeat the Demon King after a long adventure. The anime’s official website directly describes her as the mage of the heroic party that accomplished this feat.

For Frieren, whose existence spans centuries, the ten years spent with her companions initially represented only a relatively short period. This perception of time contrasts sharply with that of humans.

Himmel’s death, however, becomes a major turning point. Frieren then realises that she had never really tried to understand the man with whom she had travelled for a decade. This event sparks in her a desire to learn more about humans and the value of the moments she shares with them.

This realisation becomes the true starting point of *Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End*. Rather than focusing solely on the quest to defeat the great enemy, the story is primarily concerned with what happens after the group of heroes’ victory.

Frieren thus sets out once more several decades after her previous adventure. She now travels mainly with Fern, a young sorceress she has taken on as her apprentice, and Stark, a warrior trained by Eisen.

Their goal leads them to Aureole, the region known as the ‘Land Where Souls Rest’, situated in the north of the continent. In particular, Frieren hopes to find Himmel’s spirit there and speak to him once more. The official character profile confirms that she is currently travelling to Aureole with Fern and Stark.

Despite her vast experience, Frieren also retains an almost childlike passion for magic. The official website describes her as a true enthusiast, interested in practically any spell, even when it seems completely useless.
