Origin and character background (Lore)

Gozer is the main antagonist in the 1984 film Ghostbusters. This ancient and extremely powerful entity is worshipped as a destructive deity and seeks to enter our world through a supernatural portal opened at the top of a New York skyscraper.

Gozer is associated with Zuul and Vinz Clortho, two demonic beings tasked with preparing for his arrival by possessing Dana Barrett and Louis Tully respectively. Once the ritual is complete, Gozer manifests himself before the Ghostbusters in a particularly strange and disturbing humanoid form.

The entity then forces the Ghostbusters to choose the form of their destroyer. An involuntary thought from Ray Stantz gives rise to the gigantic Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, who has also become one of the franchise’s most iconic figures.

With his central role in the climax of the first film and his deliberately enigmatic appearance, Gozer remains one of the most recognisable and significant antagonists in the Ghostbusters universe.
