Green Lantern is an American comic strip created in 1940 and published by DC Comics.

Ancient, super-powered aliens have created and seeded all universes with "Force of Will" rings, regenerated by the Green Lantern. These rings are intended for fearless beings.

The Green Lantern name is borne by the heroes of this series as well as by secondary characters. All these characters derive their superpowers from a green ring (which the heroes recharge using a lantern, hence the name) that gives its wearer the power to materialise anything they wish (with the exception of wood for the first Green Lantern on Earth and anything yellow for all the others) with a kind of green energy, provided they have sufficient psychic strength. To join the Green Lantern "corps", a Green Lantern must first be chosen by the ring and then swear an oath: "By day or in the dark of night, no evil shall escape my gaze; let those who bow to evil fear the light of the Green Lanterns!" The Justice League of America usually includes a Green Lantern in its ranks.
