Gellert Grindelwald was one of the most brilliant but also one of the most formidable wizards of his time. Expelled from Durmstrang Institute in his youth, he settled in Godric’s Hollow, where he formed a deep and ambitious friendship with the young Albus Dumbledore, which was cut short by the mysterious death of Ariana Dumbledore. Driven by a desire to impose wizarding domination over Muggles ‘for the greater good’, Grindelwald set out in search of the Deathly Hallows and stole the legendary Elder Wand from its maker, Gregorovitch. Master of the artefact until 1945, he lost it at the end of a historic duel with Dumbledore before being imprisoned for life in Nurmengard, where Lord Voldemort murdered him fifty-three years later to extract the secrets of this invincible weapon.
