Origin and background of the character
TheBasilisk, also known as the King of Serpents, is a monstrous and mythical creature once secretly raised by Salazar Slytherin in the hidden depths of Hogwarts. Capable of reaching gigantic proportions and living for several centuries whilst moving through the castle’s plumbing, this giant reptile obeys only the commands of an heir capable of wielding the Parseltongue. In addition to possessing an extremely potent venom capable of destroying Horcruxes, the Basilisk’s direct gaze causes instant death to anyone who meets its yellow eyes, whilst a passive reflection (through a mirror, water or a ghost) causes total petrification. It is the young Harry Potter who manages to slay the monster during his second year at school, piercing it with the Sword of Gryffindor.
