Character background and lore

Albus Dumbledore is the Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for most of Harry Potter’s school years. Renowned for his intelligence, his exceptional mastery of magic and his sometimes eccentric behaviour, he is a protective figure and a role model for many pupils. He is also regarded as the only wizard whom Lord Voldemort truly feared.

Before becoming headmaster, Dumbledore taught at Hogwarts and gained an international reputation for his work in the field of magic. In particular, he collaborated with Nicolas Flamel on the Philosopher’s Stone and was involved in several important discoveries. His past, however, is marked by his complex relationship with Gellert Grindelwald and by the tragic events that befell his family.

When Voldemort began to extend his influence, Dumbledore founded the Order of the Phoenix to organise the resistance. He realises very early on the importance of Harry in the fight against the Dark Lord and watches over him throughout his training, even though his decisions are sometimes based on plans he reveals only gradually.

Dumbledore is also accompanied by Fawkes, a phoenix capable of rising from its own ashes, whose tears possess healing properties. His wisdom, his sense of sacrifice and his conviction that love is a particularly powerful form of magic make him one of the central characters of the saga.
