Origin and character background
Buck the hippogriff is a particularly loyal and devoted friend of gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid, the two beings being deeply united by a great mutual affection. Introduced during a Care of Magical Creatures lesson, this impressive and proud animal demands that proper etiquette be observed: one must look him in the eye and greet him with a bow to win his trust. Harry Potter immediately manages to form a strong bond and ride the creature through the air, unlike Draco Malfoy, whose arrogance provokes a brutal attack from the beast. Sentenced to death by the Ministry following this incident, Buck is saved at the last minute thanks to Hermione Granger’s Time-Turner. Now a free fugitive, he served as Sirius Black’s escape mount before establishing himself as a highly valuable fighter during the major wars waged against Lord Voldemort.
