Origin and lore of the object

In J.K. Rowling's work, the story of the Sorting Hat goes back to the founding of Hogwarts, around a thousand years ago. Originally, it was an ordinary hat belonging to Godric Gryffindor, one of the four founders of the school. In order to guarantee the distribution of future students after their deaths, the four founders (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Slytherin and Hufflepuff) jointly bewitched the hat. They imbued it with their own intelligence as well as a mastery of Legilimancy, a magical skill that enables it to read the thoughts, innermost abilities and personality traits of the person wearing it in order to determine which house they belong to.
