Origin and background of the character
The Death Eaters, loyal followers of Lord Voldemort, are dark wizards (mostly pure-bloods) recognisable by their long hooded cloaks and the Dark Mark they leave in their wake. While many of them joined out of deep conviction, others did so out of sheer cowardice or fear, such as Peter Pettigrew. They are responsible for particularly notorious crimes within the wizarding community, such as the murder of Gideon and Fabian Prewett or the torture inflicted on Frank and Alice Longbottom. Following the First Wizarding War, several arrested supporters claimed to have acted under the influence of the Imperius Curse, whilst others, such as Igor Karkaroff, managed to reduce their prison sentences by denouncing their former comrades-in-arms.
