Origin and background of the character
Kuromi is a fictional character created by the Japanese company Sanrio, who first appeared in 2005 in the animated series Onegai My Melody. Although she adopts a decidedly “punk” and rebellious style, characterised by her black joker hat adorned with a pink skull, Kuromi actually hides a very sensitive, romantic and feminine nature. She loves writing in her diary and cooking. She is also My Melody’s self-proclaimed rival, although their relationship is often more complex than simple enmity. As the leader of her own biker gang, the “Kuromi’s 5”, she loves to ride through the streets on her tricycle in a theatrical fashion. Her international popularity within pop and alternative culture has made her an essential icon of the franchise, appreciated for her perfect contrast between a rebellious aesthetic and cuteness.
