Character background and lore

Machi is a member of the Phantom Troupe, also known as the Genei Ryodan. The anime’s official website explicitly lists the character as a member of this criminal organisation, which plays a key role in the Yorknew City arc.

The Phantom Troupe is made up of extremely dangerous fighters and Nen users. Under the leadership of Chrollo Lucilfer, the group is particularly active in Yorknew City, where its attack on a major underground auction triggers a major conflict with the mafia.

Machi stands out for her particularly calm and pragmatic personality. Whilst some members of the Phantom Troupe are impulsive or exuberant, she generally maintains a cool and analytical demeanour, even in the most dangerous situations.

Her Nen is primarily associated with extremely fine yet strong threads, which she can manipulate with great precision. This technique has both offensive and practical applications: Machi can use her threads to immobilise a target, set traps or even stitch up wounds.

This latter ability highlights an important aspect of her role within the Brigade. Despite her aloof demeanour, Machi is particularly reliable towards the other members of the group and does not hesitate to use her skills to help them when they are injured.

She also possesses a particularly keen intuition, a trait that is regularly highlighted when she senses danger or is wary of a situation even before she can explain it rationally.

Her relationship with Hisoka is also noteworthy. Although she does not truly trust him, Machi recognises his abilities and interacts with him on several occasions during the events surrounding the Phantom Troupe.

The significance of the Phantom Troupe extends far beyond the Yorknew arc: it continues to play a role in subsequent events in Hunter × Hunter. VIZ has confirmed, in particular, that members of the Phantom Troupe are still at the heart of the clashes and investigations surrounding Hisoka in recent volumes of the manga.
